What’s in a CrossFitter’s Gym Bag?

If you’ve been training with us at the box for a little while, you’ve probably realized that showing up with the right gear can make your workouts smoother, safer, and more enjoyable. Whether you’re new here or already crushing WODs every week, having a well-prepared gym bag helps you get the most out of every session. So, let’s take a look at the essentials every CrossFitter—yes, including you—should have ready to go.

1. Shoes
Good shoes are non-negotiable. For most of your workouts, you’ll want CrossFit shoes with a flat, stable base for lifting and enough flexibility for running, box jumps, and burpees. Some of our members also bring lifters (weightlifting shoes) for heavy barbell days—if you’re planning to focus on squats or Olympic lifts, they can really help.
2. Jump Rope
If you’ve been practicing your double-unders, you already know how much easier it is with your own rope. A speed rope cut to your size gives you consistency and helps you progress faster than borrowing one from the box.
3. Hand Protection
Pull-ups, kettlebell swings, barbell cycling… your hands take a beating. That’s why we recommend bringing grips, wrist wraps, and chalk. They’ll help you protect your skin, improve your grip, and keep you training longer without tearing up your palms.
4. Mobility Tools
Mobility is a big part of staying injury-free and moving well. A lot of our athletes carry resistance bands, a lacrosse ball, or a small foam roller in their bags. Use them before class to warm up, or after to recover—it really pays off over time.
5. Recovery Essentials
Training doesn’t stop when the clock hits 0:00. Staying hydrated and fueling your body matters too. Keep a water bottle, protein shaker, and maybe some snacks in your bag. Some of you also like having recovery creams or even a mini massage gun—totally optional, but useful after a tough WOD.
6. Personal Items
Finally, don’t forget the basics: a towel, tape, deodorant, a change of clothes, and maybe an extra pair of socks. CrossFit gets sweaty, and it’s always nice to leave the box feeling fresh.
Final Thoughts
Being prepared is part of training smart. Packing your gym bag with the right essentials means you can focus on giving your best in class, without distractions. Every athlete’s bag looks a little different, but these are the basics we recommend for all of our members here at the box. Next time you head in, check your bag—are you ready?
